The mural titled Molly Bloom is a critical re-thinking of Ulysses. It consists of a mural painting, a short animation loop and a short text.

The painting can be brought to life with the help of a free AR app called ARTIVIVE. After downloading this app,  viewers can watch the video with their smartphone cameras. The woman on the mural is Molly Bloom. In the video version we can hear a short fragment of her reinvented stream of consciousness written by Zsófia Bán. The image and the text embed the contemplating woman in a contemporary context.

As of the proposition of István Szántó, the curator of the project this mural deals with the 4th Chapter in the book. This is the Chapter, in which Molly and her husband, Leopold Bloom are introduced to the reader. In the first three chapters we meet Stephan Daedelus. 

We get to know the inner thoughts of Stephen Daedelus and Leopold Bloom as soon as they appear in the book. However Joyce doesn’t give insight into the third main protagonist, Molly’s conciousness up until the last chapter, in which the character outlined is very hard to empathize with, especially as a woman. 

The mural / video proposes an alternative perspective. An essay to  (re)create an authentic, fictional, female character, and to show her stream of consciousness from as soon as she appears in the book.

The video is created with a mixture of 3D technology and traditional frame by frame animation. The latter is for animating Calypso, an image of the nymph, who is persistently trying to hold a provocative nymphic pose, but as she tires of this posture she gradually starts to grow out of the picture frame, while Molly is contemplating on her sofa.

A Molly Bloom c. falfestmény az Ulysses kritikai újragondolása egy képen, egy rövid animációban és egy oldalnyi szövegben. A képhez tartozó kiterjesztett valóság applikációval (Artivive), a néző a saját okostelefonjának kamerájával videót indíthat el, melyben a képen látható nő (Molly Bloom) megelevenedik és hallhatóvá válnak saját, újraírt belső gondolatai. A gondolatfolyam megírására Bán Zsófia írónőt kértem meg. A szöveg a nő elképzelt merengéseit mai kontextusba ágyazza, akárcsak a festmény a falon. 

Szántó István felkérése szerint a murália a könyv 4.-ik fejezetére reflektál, amelyben először találkozunk Mollyval és férjével, Leopold Bloommal. Az első három fejezet Stephen Daedelussal foglalkozik. A három főszereplő közül Leopold és Stephen szemszögét feltűnésük pillanatától kezdve látjuk, míg Joyce a regény utolsó fejezetéig nem enged betekintést Molly gondolataiba, ott pedig egy olyan karakter körvonalazódik, amellyel nőként több szempontból is nehéz azonosulni. 

A videóval kiegészült falfestmény egy alternatív perspektívát kínál: megpróbál – még ha csak egy oldal erejéig is- de hiteles, hihető (kitalált) képet adni az egyetlen női főszereplőről.

A képhez tartozó animációban 3D-s technológia és tradicionális rajzolt animáció keveredik. Ez utóbbi módszerrel Calypso nimfát animálom meg, aki a “nimfás” testtartásában elfáradva újra és újra kilóg saját képkeretéből, míg Molly az ágyába süppedve kontemplál.
